Excavation is one of the most common activities found on construction sites.Β Despite itβs wide spread use it can be very dangerous if not properly performed. Trench cave ins can be a deadly mistake. In order to ensure workers are safe while excavating preparing a safe work procedure in advance is critical. What is an excavation safe work procedure and when should you use it on a construction site?
A safe work procedure for excavation is a form that is completed on construction sites by workers and their supervisors before they perform excavating activities.Β Itβs purpose is to do a general review of safety hazards to determine if any exist, and how the work should be performed.
Prior to use, the worker reviews the checklist. In the event of deficient items they either address them or bring them to their supervisors attention. Proper training and planning must go into the work before the checklist is given to the worker.
This check list template focuses on excavation and trenching. It includes the following fields:
- Questions on training
- Questions on tie offs
- Questions on the actual excavation
- Questions on the surrounding area
- Construction project name and number
- Date inspected
- Location inspected
- Inspection team
This form has been created in Microsoft Excel but any modern day spreadsheet software should be able to open it.
